UPDATE: The 2020 Broadway revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Booth Theatre was canceled after just 9 preview performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello directs this fourth Broadway revival of Edward Albee's dramatic masterpiece Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for the 2019-2020 Broadway season.
In 1962, when Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? stunned its very first Broadway audiences with its radical, provocative, and unflinching portrait of a marriage, Edward Albee instantly became the most important American playwright of his generation. The production would go on to scoop no less than five Tony Awards in 1963, including 'Best Play.'
For a fifth contiguous season, two-time Tony Award and three-time Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf returns to the Great White Way in a starring role as she takes on the infamous character of Martha. She is joined by two-time Golden Globe nominee Rupert Everett as George, alongside Russell Tovey and 2019 Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran, as Nick and Honey, respectively.
Laurie Metcalf has steadily evolved into Broadway royalty in recent years with celebrated turns in the likes of Misery, A Doll's House, Part 2, and Hillary and Clinton. And this production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? marks her second Edward Albee play in the space of two years, having won her second Tony Award for her acclaimed performance in 2018's Three Tall Women.
Rupert Everett makes a welcomed return to the Great White Way for the first time in over a decade, although he did enjoy great critical success with his portrayal of Oscar Wilde in The Judas Kiss at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in 2016.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? hasn't been seen on Broadway since the end of its last run (also at the Booth Theatre) in 2013, so it's high time New York audiences got the opportunity to experience this timelessly explosive drama again.
