About The Music Man

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster return to Broadway in a grand revival of one of the most beloved musicals ever written, Meredith Wilson's The Music Man. Get The Music Man tickets on New York Theatre Guide now.

The creative team behind the beloved 2017 revival of Hello, Dolly! reunites for another sumptuous remount of a classic musical. Jerry Zaks directs and Warren Carlyle choreographs this lavish revival at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre, which showcases the best of Broadway: gorgeous sets, big production numbers, and majestic dancing.

Jackman and Foster, both Broadway royalty, return to the stage for the first time since 2014. Jackman last appeared on stage in Jez Butterworth's play The River at the Circle in the Square Theatre. He has won two Tony Awards, including for his Broadway-debut role in The Boy From Oz, and has hosted the Tonys ceremony four times. Foster last appeared on Broadway in a revival of Jeanine Tesori's Violet. She has been nominated for six Tony Awards, winning the Best Actress in a Musical category twice, for Anything Goes and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The Music Man musical first premiered on Broadway in 1957, running for 1,375 performances and winning the Tony Award for Best Musical. The cast album won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and ranked on the Billboard charts for 245 weeks. The Music Man on Broadway was last revived at the Neil Simon Theatre in 2000, starring Craig Bierko and Rebecca Luker in a hit production that was nominated for nine Tony Awards. The 2022 revival got six nominations, including for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography, and performance nominations for Jackman, Foster, and Jayne Houdyshell.

The Music Man remains the best-known work by Meredith Willson, who loosely based the story, setting, and characters on his own Iowa hometown.

What is The Music Man about?

In The Music Man on Broadway, Professor Harold Hill arrives in River City, Iowa promising uniforms, instruments and lessons for a new town band, and the locals are thrilled. In reality, Hill is a con man who plans to leave River City as soon as he closes the sale. But those plans change when Hill meets Marian Paroo, or "Marian the Librarian," and finds himself falling for her. Soon Hill must follow through on his big promises or else lose out on his chance at love.

How long will Hugh Jackman be in The Music Man?

Hugh Jackman will star as Harold Hill in The Music Man until the show closes on January 8, 2023. Sutton Foster, who plays Marian Paroo, is also starring for the entire run.
