David Mamet's powerful drama American Buffalo returns to Broadway more relevant than ever and boasting an all-star cast. American Buffalo tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon.
At a junk shop in Chicago, owner Donny believes he has just been swindled. Donny sold a buffalo nickel to a customer for $90, only to realize too late that the nickel was worth much more. Donny hatches a plot to steal the nickel back, getting both his young employee and a poker friend involved. But soon events will spin out of Donny's control.
American Buffalo returns to Broadway with a glittering cast. Tony Award winner Laurence Fishburne stars as Donny, alongside Oscar winner Sam Rockwell as poker buddy Teach and Golden Globe Award winner Darren Criss as 'gofer' Bobby. Seasoned director Neil Pepe stages the third Mamet revival on Broadway of his career. Pepe has also staged several of Mamet's works off-Broadway and is artistic director of Atlantic Theater Company, which Mamet co-founded in 1985.
Mamet's classic and enduring play is revived on Broadway for the third time. The American Buffalo Broadway premiere was in 1977, with a cast featuring Robert Duvall. It returned in 1983, this time at the Booth Theatre and featuring Al Pacino. The American Buffalo play was last revived on Broadway in 2008 at the Belasco Theatre, starring Cedric the Entertainer and John Leguizamo, though that production closed after just eight performances.
Though it is one of Mamet's earliest plays, American Buffalo retains its power as an intense and brutally truthful dissection of the American Dream and the extremes to which men can be driven by desperation. Mamet is a Pulitzer Prize-winning winner and has been nominated for two Tony Awards. Other acclaimed works by Mamet include Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow.
Tickets to American Buffalo will be available soon.
