Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage returns to Broadway with Clyde's, a riotously funny and deeply stirring new comedy about dreaming big, finding purpose, and creating the perfect sandwich. Clyde's tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now. Get Clyde's Broadway tickets today.
Clyde's isn't just any truck stop sandwich joint. For the employees, all of whom are formerly incarcerated, this sandwich shop is their chance to build a new life. The callous owner of Clyde's isn't going to make it easy. But when the staff hit upon a dream of creating the perfect sandwich, they come together to build themselves a better future.
Nottage follows-up her Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat with new comedy Clyde's. Like Sweat, Nottage's new play draws from years of research conducted in Reading, Pennsylvania, where she interviewed residents on the impact of workforce reduction, increasing poverty and the changing racial composition of the city.
Clyde's first premiered at the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis in 2019, under the title Floyd's. Nottage adjusted the sandwich shop's name to avoid unintended associations with George Floyd. Clyde's now opens Second Stage's first Broadway season since the shutdown of March 2020. Clyde's will play the company's Broadway home, the intimate The Hayes Theater - Broadway's smallest house at just 597 seats.
Chris Hewitt of Minnesota's Star Tribune wrote that Clyde's is "funny, optimistic and compassionate," declaring it "a play we need right now"; while Stephanie March of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine wrote of the play's wonderful aftertaste: "In the end there is love and laughter, there is connection, there is possibility, and there is a sandwich."
Nottage is the only woman playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. With Clyde's on Broadway, she re-teams with director Kate Whoriskey, whose Broadway production of Sweat earned a Tony nomination for Best Play.
