In the A Beautiful Noise musical, two actors play Diamond at different stages of his life: as a young man trying to kickstart his musical career, and in the present day when he's faced with a personal and professional crossroads. The story of how he went from a poor, Jewish Brooklyn boy to a beloved, world-famous singer is set to all his greatest hits, like "Sweet Caroline" and "America."
Diamond's iconic song “Sweet Caroline” has become an anthem to Red Sox fans — at every home game, an eighth-inning singalong takes place at Fenway Park. The song’s connection to Boston was seared into the hearts of millions when, in the immediate aftermath of the 2013 Marathon Bombing, teams around the Major Leagues played the song to show solidarity with the city while at Fenway, Diamond himself took to the field to sing an emotional rendition of the 1969 classic.
The premiere of A Beautiful Noise on Broadway coincided with the 50th anniversary of Diamond's concert series at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre in 1972. The Winter Garden is only one of the major venues he's played in his storied career — in 2015, for example, he famously played the Barclays Center for a homecoming concert, his first Brooklyn performance in nearly 50 years. For his decades of music, he's won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, is a Kennedy Center honoree, and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A Beautiful Noise's pre-Broadway tryout took place at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre in summer 2022, featuring Tony Award nominees Will Swenson and Mark Jacoby as the younger and older Diamond, respectively. Michael Mayer, who directed the current revival of Funny Girl on Broadway, directs both the Boston and Broadway productions. Choreography is by Steven Hoggett, who's worked in both New York and London and whose Broadway credits include Once and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He's also the movement director for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
