Golden Shield is a play that fuses a family drama with a legal drama. It centers on two sisters: Julie Chen, an American lawyer who files a class-action lawsuit involving the Chinese government and an international tech company; and Eva, who Julie hires as her translator for the legal proceedings. Julie has gotten a Chinese dissident to testify in American court against the tech company and needs Eva's translation skills, but the women don't see eye-to-eye, as they haven't been in each other's lives for a while. As the two work to speak the same language — literally and figuratively — and win the case, they must make compromises and move beyond their past differences.
Golden Shield takes its name from the Chinese government’s internet firewall, and King based her play loosely on a real 2016 class-action lawsuit that Chinese dissenters brought against a U.S. company accused of colluding with China.
May Adrales directs the American premiere of Golden Shield in New York. The show was originally commissioned by Melbourne Theatre Company's NEXT STAGE Writers' Program, and it made its world premiere in Australia with Melbourne Theatre Company in August 2019. King's play was a finalist for the 2020 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, alongside works including Aleshea Harris's What to Send Up When It Goes Down (which has had multiple Off-Broadway runs between 2019 and 2021) and Dominique Morisseau's Confederates, whose world premiere with Signature Theatre in March 2022 coincides with Golden Shield off Broadway.
