Through original tunes like “Woman Is,” “Perfection,” and “Stay,” the Lempicka musical tells the story of a young woman fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution for Paris with her husband and young child. The story, which spans almost six decades, details how Lempicka goes from a refugee to a highly sought-after Art Deco portraitist in French high society. Through personal and political struggles — including a forbidden romance between Lempicka and one of her models — Lempicka tells the story of a groundbreaking figure who reimagined what women can be.
The Lempicka musical premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2018. A pre-Broadway run at the La Jolla Playhouse followed in 2022, receiving rave reviews. The San Diego Union-Tribune praised the "tender and gorgeous solo songs that define and illuminate the characters.”
Those songs are by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould, who also co-wrote the show's book. They make their Broadway debuts with Lempicka in New York. Alongside them is director Rachel Chavkin, known for her Tony Award-winning staging of Hadestown and Tony-nominated production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
