Playwright Lucas Hnath and magician Steve Cuiffo's new show comes to the stage in A Simulacrum. Get A Simulacrum tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
A Simulacrum is a play and a magic act in one. When Hnath asked Cuiffo to demonstrate some sleight-of-hand tricks, he did — and from that interaction, this show fusing playwriting and illusion was born.
Both Hnath and Cuiffo do double duty on A Simulacrum off Broadway: In addition to being co-creators, Cuiffo stars in the show, and Hnath directs. Hnath is best known for his plays A Doll's House, Part 2 and Dana H., both of which appeared on Broadway. The former earned Hnath a Tony nomination for Best Play, and the latter won Tonys for Best Leading Actress and Best Sound Design. A Simulacrum marks Hnath's directorial debut.
Cuiffo has collaborated with Hnath before, having served as the lip sync and illusion consultant for Dana H. Independently, Cuiffo has worked on a variety of stage shows, including solo sleight-of-hand acts and collaborations with other performers. For the screen, Cuiffo served as the magic consultant for the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and created illusions for the film White Noise.
