Pulitzer Prize finalist Will Arbery premieres his newest play, Evanston Salt Costs Climbing, with The New Group this fall. Get Evanston Salt Costs Climbing tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Evanston Salt Costs Climbing is a play centered on Peter and Basil, two salt truck drivers in the title Illinois city. With winters getting worse and worse, their jobs are essential — but if the new technology their boss envisions actually gets implemented, their labor will not be. And the possibility of unemployment might not be the only reason for their sense of impending dread. Try as they might to distract themselves with humor, something even scarier might be lurking beneath the streets where they work.
Arbery is the playwright of Heroes of the Fourth Turning, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and Corsicana, which premiered off Broadway in spring 2022. He self-describes as "from Texas and Wyoming" and sets most of his work in these states; Corsicana and his play Plano take place in the former, and Fourth Turning in the latter. Regardless of setting, Arbery's work focuses on the stories of the ordinary people living in rural, oft-overlooked areas of America.
Danya Taymor directs Evanston Salt Costs Climbing off Broadway. Taymor made her Broadway directing debut in 2021 with Pass Over, the first new Broadway show to open since the pandemic. She previously directed that show off Broadway in 2018, and her other Off-Broadway credits include Arbery's Heroes of the Fourth Turning and Jeremy O. Harris's "Daddy". She is the niece of Tony-winning The Lion King director Julie Taymor.

Winters keep getting worse in Evanston, IL where salt truck drivers Peter and Basil battle the ice and snow and pass the time with jokes and stories. But what's with this creeping sense of dread? Is it because their boss Maiworm has noble visions of new green technology that would make their jobs obsolete? Or is there a more terrifying warning calling out from under these roads? At least they have each other, right?
Pulitzer Prize finalist Will Arbery confronts humanity’s darkest fears with humor, warmth, and the fortitude of municipal public servants in this play about climate and change.
Directed by Danya Taymor (Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery, "Daddy" with The New Group), Evanston Salt Costs Climbing features Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined, Marys Seacole), Jeb Kreager (HBO’s Mare of Easttown, Heroes of the Fourth Turning), Ken Leung (HBO’s Industry, Lost) and Rachel Sachnoff (Evanston Salt Costs Climbing at White Heron Theatre).
