Following his acclaimed play at New York Theatre Workshop, Nat Turner in Jerusalem, Whiting Award winner Nathan Alan Davis returns to New York with his latest work, The Refuge Plays. New York Theatre Workshop and Roundabout Theatre Company co-produce this engaging and surprising play that spans 70 years, features a cast of 10 actors, and asks, where and how do we seek refuge? Get The Refuge Play tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The Refuge Plays starts on a dark night in the woods of southern Illinois. There, a ghost tells Gail that she will die within the next 24 hours. That’s just the beginning: The new play, premiering this fall, is a surprising and bold take on the classic American family drama, twisting and overthrowing the genre to create something exciting, memorable, and daringly fresh.
Patricia McGregor, the newly appointed artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop and the inaugural Artist in Residence for Adam Driver’s nonprofit Arts in the Armed Forces, directs an ensemble cast in an explosive show that also features movement, original music, and more. The Refuge Plays in New York is at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, a home for audacious new plays.
For this piece, Davis returns to New York Theatre Workshop, where he was a 2050 Artistic Fellow and NYTW Usual Suspect. His previous hit there, Nat Turner in Jerusalem, earned rave reviews: New York Magazine wrote that the play was as “mysterious and open-ended as possible, and thus, in its way, more terrifying.” This is emblematic of Davis’s enthralling works, which dare to challenge and reinvent form.
Don’t miss this contemporary story, which is for anyone who is seeking love, seeking family, or seeking refuge. Get tickets to The Refuge Plays off Broadway on New York Theatre Guide.
