MCC Theater continues its Off-Broadway season with Bees and Honey, a new work by Guadalís Del Carmen that tugs at the heartstrings. Get Bees and Honey tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Bees and Honey isn't a musical, but it is based on a song: Juan Luis Guerra's "Como Abeja Al Panal," which translates to "like a bee to the honeycomb." The song tells the story of a forbidden love between two people who are nonetheless strongly drawn toward each other, declaring their passion against all odds.
The Bees and Honey play tells a slightly different story, focusing on a married couple, Manuel and Johaira, who live in Washington Heights. As they enter new stages in their lives — with both on the brink of career milestones, while also dealing with a sudden tragedy — they also face new challenges, forcing them to find out whether love alone is enough to keep their relationship alive.

Director Melissa Crespo is likewise a multi-hyphenate, having worked as a playwright and co-founded 3Views on Theater, a website that publishes diverse critical reviews on shows. She makes her own Off-Broadway directorial debut with Bees and Honey.
