The Doubt play is set at St. Nicholas Church School, a fictional all-boys' Catholic school in the Bronx, in 1964. Its principal, the rigid and mistrusting Sister Aloysius, finds herself in conflict with one of her teachers, Father Flynn, who she suspects had inappropriate relations with a student during a one-on-one meeting. But what's truth, what's fiction, and what's doubt? Amid this crisis of faith, the audience gets plenty of room to decide what — and who — they believe in.

Schreiber won the 2005 Tony for performing in Glengarry Glen Ross and is a five-time Golden Globe and three-time Emmy nominee for playing the title role on Ray Donovan. Ryan, an Oscar nominee for Gone Baby Gone, replaces originally announced star Tyne Daly, who withdrew from the production indefinitely for a medical emergency.

Shanley is the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Moonstruck, and his extensive list of well-known plays includes The Dreamer Examines His Pillow, Outside Mullingar, and Prodigal Son. A few months before Doubt on Broadway, Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott star in a revival of his 1984 play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Shanley is also premiering and directing his newest play, Brooklyn Laundry, off Broadway in 2024.
