The How to Dance in Ohio musical is based on director Alexandra Shiva's documentary of the same name, which follows seven autistic adults preparing for a spring formal dance at an Ohio group counseling center. In the process, they learn valuable social skills, change up their routines, and experience love, stress, and independence as they never have before.
The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on HBO in 2015 and won a Peabody Award the following year. News of a musical adaptation first surfaced in 2018, with legendary Broadway director/producer Harold Prince tapped to direct. Upon his 2019 death, Sammi Cannold, known for directing productions at multiple major stages across the U.S., assumed the role of director.
Cannold now makes her Broadway debut with How to Dance in Ohio in New York, and she's not the only one. Bookwriter/lyricist Rebekah Greer Melocik, composer Jacob Yandura, and choreographer Mayte Natalio make their debuts as well alongside the seven autistic lead actors, all reprising their roles from the musical's world premiere in Syracuse, New York in 2022.
