One of today’s most celebrated screen actresses, Sandra Oh is best known for her work on TV — she’s a multiple-Emmy Award nominee for her roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve — and now she returns to the New York stage to star in this thrilling new play by a shape-shifting playwright.
The Welkin off Broadway brings us back to 1759 in rural England. In a community where not much happens, townspeople eagerly await the return of Halley’s comet. As anticipation builds, however, another event threatens to eclipse the celestial celebration: a young woman is sentenced to death. She tries to escape the noose by claiming she is pregnant, igniting a fierce debate as twelve ordinary women gather to decide whether she is telling the truth or not. A wry and blazing comedy about democracy and housework, The Welkin plays with suspense and humor to explore rifts in community and everyday events beneath the brilliant cosmos.
Kirkwood’s latest is sure to stun and surprise: a winner of the 2014 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Chimerica, a drama about Chinese-American relations, Kirkwood is most well-known for her Broadway play, The Children, about retiring adults grappling with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. Each play takes a refreshing and exciting new form, keeping audiences on their toes as Kirkwood’s stories slowly reel you in before packing a big punch. Tickets to The Welkin will be available soon.
