Hot off its acclaimed run in Chicago, Death Becomes Her comes to Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre this fall. Based on the 1992 film starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, the stage version now features musical theater icons in the leading roles: “huge comic talents both, Simard (Company, Disaster!) and Hilty (Wicked, Smash) are ideally cast,” the Chicago Tribune raves.
Death Becomes Her follows two women who fight for the affections of the same man and drink a magic potion that promises eternal youth. Madeline Ashton (Hilty) is a beauty of stage and screen (just ask her); Helen Sharp (Simard) is a long-suffering author who lives in her frenemy’s shadow (just ask her). Their relationship grooves along steadily enough…until Madeline steals Helen’s fiancé away. Drinking a magical potion, Madeline and Helen begin a new era of life (and death) with their youth and beauty restored…and a grudge to last eternity. Throughout the show, they'll be burying the hatchet…again, and again, and again.
Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli, known for his flashy dancing in Newsies, directs and choreographs a top-notch cast: joining Ashton and Simard are fellow Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber (Shrek, Company) and Grammy Award winner Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child, Chicago). Expect dazzling production numbers, campy humor, and soaring duets belted to the heavens — or perhaps to hell below. In this hilarious musical, life’s a bitch and then you die — or not.
