A theatrical event unlike any other this season, Illinoise arrives on Broadway following two critically acclaimed, sold-out productions this year at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and then off Broadway at the Park Avenue Armory. New York Theatre Guide says the work “is a cathartic experience for dance-theatre newcomers and fans alike.”
Bringing together some of today’s most exciting artists, Illinoise features an all-star team: Academy and Grammy nominee Sufjan Stevens’s beloved album Illinois is the show’s score, and Justin Peck directs and choreographs while also co-writing the book alongside Jackie Sibblies Drury. Peck, a resident choreographer at the New York City Ballet, has dazzled audiences with his contemporary reinterpretations of classic works, including Carousel on Broadway and West Side Story on the silver screen. Drury is a Pulitzer Prize winner for her astonishing play Fairview.
Sufjan’s music sets the scene for a fresh story adapting his 2005 album: in Illinoise, Peck creates a coming-of-age story that blends theatre and dance, exploring “the hot zone between childhood and adulthood when emotions can be at their most overwhelming,” per The New York Times. The story follows Henry, a shy writer with a story to tell who wanders into an Illinois cornfield. There, he befriends other wayward, yearning souls who, through music and dance, express their deepest dreams and desires. Sufjan’s gorgeous melodies connect these intertwining stories as singers breathe fresh life into his concept album while dancers, some from the New York City Ballet, physicalize Peck’s acrobatic choreography.
A singular piece of theatre in which dance leads the storytelling, Illinoise is a treat for longtime Stevens fans and also those new to his music. Experience Illinoise on Broadway — tickets to Illinoise are now on New York Theatre Guide.
