See Tony Award nominee Dominique Morisseau's compelling broken-family drama Sunset Baby, back in New York for the first time since 2013, when the New York Times named it a Critic’s Pick. Check back for information on Sunset Baby tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Originally produced by the Labyrinth Theater Company 10 years ago, Morisseau's powerful play is revived at Off-Broadway’s Signature Theatre, marking the third installment in her residency with the company, following the successful Paradise Blue and Confederates.
With a cast led by Emmy nominee and The Queen’s Gambit star Moses Ingram, as well as a script that the New York Times called reminiscent of “the socially conscious family melodramas of the Great Depression” that infuses old-fashioned generic staples with hot new blood,” Sunset Baby promises to be a must-see experience.
The Sunset Baby play unfolds in East New York, Brooklyn, where Nina finds herself surprised by the unexpected arrival of her estranged father, Kenyatta, a former Black revolutionary and ex-political prisoner. Kenyatta, whose aspirations of societal change seem to have faded, seeks Nina's help in retrieving letters written by her recently deceased mother. This sparks intense emotional turmoil, unearthing years of regret and resentment between the father and daughter who had to navigate life's challenges alone in his absence.
Morisseau, a MacArthur fellow and Tony-nominated playwright, is recognized for her impactful works, including The Detroit Project, A 3-Play Cycle, which comprises Skeleton Crew, Paradise Blue, and Detroit '67. Her repertoire also includes the musical Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations, which earned her a 2019 Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. The Broadway premiere of Skeleton Crew also earned her a Best Play nomination three years later.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Morisseau transitioned from an actress and performance poet to a celebrated playwright. She is a two-time winner of the NAACP Image Award, a distinction celebrating outstanding achievements within communities of color across various artistic fields.
