About A Knock on the Roof

Get A Knock on the Roof tickets and see a topical new play at New York Theatre Workshop about motherhood, survival, and everyday life in Gaza. Obie Award winner Oliver Butler (What the Constitution Means to Me) returns to New York Theatre Workshop to direct and develop this new play, which is presented in partnership with Under the Radar, the famed experimental theatre festival at The Public.

Experience A Knock on the Roof off Broadway and see a show this winter unlike any other. Set the timer, start the clock: the everyday existence of an extraordinary mother is timed to the second so she can get everything done during one sweltering summer. Prepare the meals, pack the bags, and practice drills. Mariam is not only meticulously mapping out her family’s day, she’s also practicing for the run of her career: the dreaded “knock on the roof.”

With dry wit and the determination of an Olympian, Mariam is up against the clock in this unforgettable new play about obsession, ambition, and making it day to day in Gaza. A co-production with piece by piece productions, A Knock on the Roof stars and is created by Khawla Ibraheem, a playwright, actor, and director based in Majdal Shams, in the occupied Golan Heights. A regular at many theatres in Palestine, she’s won Best Director and Best Script at the Palestinian National Theatre Festival. She’s also been a fellow at Macdowell and as an artist-in-residence at the Sundance Theatre Lab, where she met Butler.

Illuminating the life of a single Palestinian on stage, Ibraheem offers a remarkable, intimate, and impactful story in this astounding premiere.
